Abstract
Two of the most decisive historiographical and methodological tools of STS have been a sharp focus on science in its local production and an increasing openness to visual materials (diagrams, photographs). How might we use film to advance the field by intensifying these orienting strategies? Using examples from historical, ethnographic, live action, interviews, and animation, I will report on some ways that film might build on and open up lines of inquiry in the study of 20th and early 21st century mix of science, technology, and politics.
