This seminar will describe how systematic gene expression studies can address questions regarding the development and evolution of animal regulatory programs. Evidence will be presented suggesting that developmental milestones punctuate gene expression in the Caenorhabditis embryo. Also, a new method for characterizing gene expression programs at the single-cell level will be described.
