The first millennium A.D. saw intense contacts across the Indian Ocean,
with a common market stretching from the Mediterranean and East Africa to
China and Southeast Asia. This paper looks at the port of Vizhinjam in
southwest India and tries to how maritime trade interacted with the fortunes
of South Indian dynasties.
