Abstract
A two-day conference marking 250 years since the publication of Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations (1776). Leading scholars will reflect on the history and theory of long-term economic growth and development across six thematic sessions: The Wealth of Nations, Adam Smith’s World, Religion and Moral Sentiment, Long-Term Perspectives on British Economic Development, Finance and Economic Development, and From Colonies to Global Economic Development. Sessions feature contributions from scholars at Cambridge, Oxford, LSE , Glasgow, Warwick, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Heriot-Watt, and Sussex, examining topics including women’s and children’s labour, poor law and settlement, religion and economic development, Smithian growth in England and Wales, financial intermediation, colonial economic development, and inclusive wealth measurement.
