Abstract: The Jacobian of a complex projective curve C is a cornerstone of algebraic geometry. This space is projective when C is smooth but non-compact otherwise. As a remedy, a natural modular compactification—the compactified Jacobian—has been introduced, which plays important roles in algebraic geometry, geometric representation theory, and knot theory. In this talk, I will introduce compactified Jacobians and discuss their geometry, topology, and relations to hyperkähler manifolds and enumerative geometry.
