Phonons are one of the most important quasiparticles in condensed matter physics; they influence a wide range of physical properties. However, accurate experimental measurement of acoustic phonons is very difficult. In this seminar I will explain how phonons can be measured by controlling spin degree of freedom of helium atoms and why such measurement will advance the characterization of phonons.
