If you have a question about this talk, please contact nobody. OGGW01 - Discrete and profinite groups I will survey recent work on understanding the behaviour of homology through chains of finite index subgroups. I will mention a number of questions and conjectures relating the invariants to profinite rigidity, fibring, homology over universal skew fields, hyperbolic volume, and L^2-torsion. Based on joint works with Naomi Andrew, Sam Fisher, Yassine Guerch, Sebastian Hensel, Monika Kudlinska, Ian Leary, Wolfgang Lück, and Ric Wade.
