Reconstructing Mesopotamia’s long-term land use histories requires integrating diverse lines of evidence, from satellite remote sensing to the analysis of microbotanical remains. This talk presents ongoing phytolith research from the Erbil Plain and broader region to highlight how microbotanical data can reveal patterns of agropastoral strategies and landscape change over millennia. In addition to archaeological insights, the talk considers how modern land use both obscures and informs our interpretations of the past, underscoring the importance of integrating present-day processes into narratives of the region’s dynamic landscape histories.

This talk is part of the Ancient Near East Seminar Series series.
