The density Hales-Jewett theorem has the same
relationship to the Hales-Jewett theorem that Szemerédi’s
theorem has to van der Waerden’s theorem. Until recently,
the only known proof was long and complicated and relied
heavily on ergodic theory. Recently an elementary and much
simpler proof has been discovered. Unusually, the research
was carried out in the open by several people on blogs and
a wiki. This talk will, however, be about the mathematics
rather than the unusual process that led to it.
