Abstract
The lexicon is strewn with alliterating near synonyms. They probably arose from original echo formations like spic and span. The echo formations in their turn arose through a combination of two actors, an adaptation of near-synonyms to their hosts via etymologically unmotivated affixation; and the outcome of a word-game which creates portmanteau words like smog.
