MHMW01 - Modern history of mathematics: emerging themes A common strategy of scientific popularizers (Laplace, Arago, Flammarion, to name a few) has been to express the content of the sciences without relying on mathematics. Several questions can be raised regarding this:- Why is mathematics considered the main hindrance to the diffusion of scientific knowledge? – How effective has this strategy proven to be? – Does increasing mathematics literacy or numeracy impact this strategy? – How is mathematics itself popularized?
