MHMW01 - Modern history of mathematics: emerging themes The talk provides a history of Leibniz’s ideas about space by looking at the archival material held in the Niedesachsiche Landesbibliothek in Hanover. Making use of manuscript sources, I will show that, contrary to standard readings, Leibniz did not develop a relational theory of space until 1688 ,when he read Newton’s Principia and realized that he had to respond to the theory of absolute space with a new, powerful, and rich alternative theory. The talk is the occasion of a reflection on the role of archives in making history of mathematics and philosophy. This talk is part of the Isaac Newton Institute Seminar Series series.
