ADIW03 - Climate Applications of Layering Co-authors: Qi Zhou, Leo Middleton, Paul Pruzina In this talk, I will start by discussing the use of sorted buoyancy coordinates to diagnose layer formation in stratified turbulence, following Taylor and Zhou (JFM, 2017) using the framework from Winters and D’Asaro (JFM, 1996). I will then discuss the same framework applied to double diffusive flows, linking the energetics of double diffusion with the evolution of the sorted buoyancy profile in Middleton and Taylor (JFM, 2020). Finally, I will present new work (Pruzina et al.) using sorted buoyancy coordinates to diagnose layer formation in diffusive convection.
