This year we organise a series of lectures on Geographies of Russia. It will showcase various aspects of geography, covering environmental issues, socio-economic and cultural geography, the geography of the Arctic and the culture of the indigenous peoples of Siberia. We are inviting well-known geographers from Russia, Britain and other countries.

Delighted to invite you to inaugural lecture from the Geographies of Russia series curated by Dr Olga Tutubalina, a Visiting Scholar at the University of Cambridge and a CamRuSS Trustee.

The first lecture “Climate Change in Russia” will be delivered online on Friday, 24 March from 18:00 to 20:00 by Alexander Chernokulsky, a well-known Russian climatologist, researcher and scientist. The talk will be in Russian with slides in English.

Alexander Chernokulsky is a lead author and co-author of more than 15 books and book chapters, and a lead of several scientific projects, member of the editorial board of the journals Atmosphere and Pure and Applied Geophysics, Laureate of the RAS Prize and the Moscow Government Prize for Young Scientists, Scientific Secretary of the Scientific Council of the Russian Academy of Sciences on the problems of the Earth’s climate, Deputy Chairman of the Council of Young Scientists of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and a champion of climate science outreach. In 2005 Alexander graduated from the Faculty of Geography of Moscow State University specialising in Hydrometeorology. In 2010 he was awarded a PhD in Physics of the Atmosphere and Hydrosphere. Since 2002, Chernokulsky has been working at the A.M. Obukhov Institute of Atmospheric Physics RAS . Alexander has authored over 70 articles in peer-reviewed journals on climate change and weather hazards.

This lecture will present modern scientific views on the ongoing global and regional climate changes (with a focus on Russia) and their consequences, as well as the causes of these changes. In particular, factors of climate variability (natural and anthropogenic) will be considered. Key evidence of the anthropogenic nature of modern climate changes will be presented, and forecasted estimates of future climate changes will be discussed. Alexander will explain the main differences between climate forecast and weather forecast and dismantle some “climate myths”.
