If you have a question about this talk, please contact Dhruv Ranganathan. The moduli space of smooth curves admits a universal Jacobian, which is a smooth and proper group stack. If we want to extend the Jacobian to the boundary of the moduli of stable curves, these properties cannot simultaneously persist. Many nice models exist, sacrificing one property to obtain the others. We will talk about two natural models, the Neron model and the logarithmic Jacobian, and explain how they are related.
