Farming systems are changing and there is much focus on the role that robotics and automation needs to play in new systems, both to overcome short term challenges and in the longer term the transformation to sustainable farming. In this talk I will explore one of the levers that multidisciplinary teams can pull, that of the design of the crop itself. I will review the current state of the art in crop genetics in an attempt to demonstrate what is possible. I will then focus on the soft fruit industry and highlight some of the challenges and opportunities around sustainable intensification.
