Abstract

Join us this Antimicrobial Resistance Awareness Week to hear from a panel of experts about the global threat posed to modern medicine by antimicrobial resistance – that is, the development resistance of bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites to drugs – and emerging strategies for solving it.

Our speakers for the panel are:

Professor Julian Parkhill is the Head of Infection Genomics at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and uses genomic approaches to understand the evolution of pathogenic bacteria on short and long timescales, including the evolution of antibiotic resistance.

Dr Esmita Charani is the Senior Lead Pharmacist in the faculty of Medicine at Imperial College London at the NIHR Health Protection Research Unit for Healthcare Associated Infections and Antimicrobial Resistance. She is also a visiting Researcher at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in India, where she is involved in helping implement and investigate national antibiotic stewardship programmes.

Dr David Summers is a group leader in the Department of Genetics with a focus on bacterial plasmids – small genetic elements which frequently confer antibiotic resistance – and how they are retained and transmitted in bacterial populations.

Dr Hendrik van Veen is a group leader in the Department of Pharmacology with a focus on molecular mechanisms of antibiotic resistance in bacteria, including multidrug transporters.

Each speaker will give a brief presentation followed by open questions for the panel. There will then be refreshments available in the Central Hall where you can meet the panelists and ask more questions.
