DESCRIPTION:The talk will present some recent work on autonomi
c Quality-of-Service (QoS) management using online
performance models. In the first part of the talk
\, distributed event-based systems will be conside
red and the issues and challenges in managing thei
r performance and capacity will be discussed. The
second part of the talk will focus on dynamic serv
ice-oriented systems looking at enterprise Grid en
vironments as an example. We will present a novel
methodology for designing autonomic QoS-aware reso
urce managers that have the capability to predict
the performance of the components they manage and
allocate resources in such a way that service leve
l agreements are honored. Advanced features such a
 s workload characterization on-the-fly\, dynamic d
eployment of servers on demand\, as well as dynami
c system reconfiguration after a server failure wi
 ll be considered.
