DESCRIPTION:The moduli space of curves (or Riemann surfaces of
dimension 1) has\nbeen studied by geometers and t
opologists since Riemann's papers in the\nlate 19t
h century. More recently\, the subject has had sig
nificant interactions\nwith mathematics physics. W
hile much is known about the geometry of the\nmodu
li space\, many important questions remain open.\n
\nI will discuss basic cohomology classes\, their
associated rings\, and the\nrelations they satisfy
. The study has origins in ideas of Mumford from
the 1980s\, conjectures\nof Faber-Zagier from the
90s\, and more recent proposals of Pixton.\nThe ro
le of special hypergeometric series and the conne
ctions to\nCohomological Field Theories will be hi
ghlighted.\n\nThere will be a wine reception follo
wing the talk in the Central Core.
