DESCRIPTION:*This interactive mathematical session will focus
on a range of tricks that appear to be magic\; how
ever\, we will closely examine them to see what is
really happening behind the scenes. Some of the t
ricks work as a result of clever\, but simple\, ma
thematics\, whilst others are more a case of proba
bility or psychology.* A few of the exercises will
be left unsolved by the group so students may thi
nk about possible solutions after the lecture. Stu
dents are asked to bring a pencil or pen and a bas
ic calculator to the lecture.\n\n*About the speake
r:* Adam Boddison is a freelance mathematics consu
ltant interested in engaging the minds of young pe
ople with how maths affects everyday life. In addi
tion to teaching maths at both primary and seconda
ry levels\, he is a postgraduate researcher invest
igating how video conferencing technology can enri
ch the maths curriculum at Key Stage 2. Adam's wid
er interests include strategy games\, magic and ps
 ychology.\n\n*Audience:* secondary students\, ages
11-14*\n\n<b>Admission to all our lectures is fre
e but by ticket only: please email Heather Benucci
using the 'mmptalks' link above\;</b> clearly sta
te the date and title of the lecture you would lik
e to attend and how many tickets you require and w
e will confirm your ticket allocation by email.
