  Cambridge. \n\nThe Sixteenth Annual Stasiuk Lectu
 re\, which will be held in the *Umney Theatre of R
 obinson College at 17:30 on Friday\, 23 February 2
 018*\, will be delivered by *Professor Mark von Ha
 gen*. His presentation is entitled _*Brest-Litovsk
  and the Making of Modern Ukraine and Russia*_. \n
 \nIn February 1918\, the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk f
 acilitated the emergence of an independent\, inter
 nationally-recognised Ukrainian state. In the Annu
 al Cambridge Stasiuk Lecture\, Professor von Hagen
  explains these tumultuous events of a century ago
  and reflects upon their resonance today\, at a cr
 itical juncture in the history of Ukrainian-Russia

 ark von Hagen teaches the history of Eastern Europ
 e and Russia\, with a focus on Ukrainian-Russian r
 elations\, at Arizona State University in the Unit
 ed States. Prior to his tenure at ASU\, he worked 
 for 24 years at Columbia University\, where he cha
 ired the Department of History and directed the Ha
 rriman Institute. He is a former President of the 
 International Association for Ukrainian Studies.\n
 \nMark von Hagen is the author of _Soldiers in the
  Proletarian Dictatorship: The Red Army and the So
 viet Socialist State\, 1917-1930_ (Cornell\, 1990)
 \; co-editor (with Andreas Kappeler\, Zenon Kohut 
 and Frank Sysyn) of _Culture\, Nation\, Identity: 
 the Ukrainian-Russian Encounter\, 1600-1945_ (Toro
 nto\, 2003)\; and has co-edited (with Jane Burbank
  and Anatoly Remnev) the title _Geographies of Emp
 ire: Ruling Russia\, 1700-1991_ (Indiana\, 2004). 
 He has written articles and essays on topics in hi
 storiography\, civil-military relations\, national
 ity politics and minority history\, and cultural h
 istory. He is on the editorial boards of the journ
 als _Ab Imperio_ and _Kritika_.\n\nVon Hagen was e
 ducated at Georgetown University\, Indiana Univers
 ity-Bloomington\, and Stanford University\, where 
 he received his Ph.D. He has also taught at Stanfo
 rd University\, Yale University\, the Free Univers
 ity of Berlin\, and the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en
  Sciences Sociales (Paris).\n
