DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nSerendipity influences the development
of science at every level\, even when it comes to
the biggest question of all - how and when was ou
r universe created? The Big Bang model of the univ
erse is one of the triumphs of modern science\, bu
t its development relied on numerous accidental di
scoveries. Simon Singh will describe the history o
f the Big Bang model and tell the stories of the b
rilliant astronomers who used a combination of gen
ius and luck to instigate one the biggest evolutio
ns in twentieth century science. This lecture will
include references to Led Zeppelin and electrocut
 ed gherkins. \n\nBiography\n\nAfter completing his
PhD in particle physics at Cambridge University\,
Simon Singh became a science journalist. For seve
n years he was a producer and\ndirector in the BBC
TV Science Department\, working on programmes suc
h as Tomorrow's World and Horizon. In 1997 he won
a BAFTA for his documentary about Fermat's Last Th
eorem. He then went on to present programmes (The\
nScience of Secrecy\, Five Numbers\, The Serendipi
ty of Science\, Mind Games) on radio and televisio
