DESCRIPTION:The gases contained in magma are the protagonists 
 of volcanic eruptions. Emissions of sulfur\, chlor
 ine and fluorine from volcanoes can also have prof
 ound impacts on the atmosphere\, climate and envir
 onment. Measurements of volcanic effluents are the
 refore vital in understanding how volcanoes work\,
  assessing volcanic hazards\, and evaluating the l
 inks between volcanism and the Earth system. But t
 hey are not easy to make using more conventional s
 ampling techniques\, not least because of the inhe
 rent danger of working around an active volcano. T
 his presentation summarises some relevant developm
 ents in ultraviolet and infrared remote sensing\, 
 and illustrates their application in probing the p
 lumbing systems of several active volcanoes\, incl
 uding Erta ‘Ale in Ethiopia\, and Mt. Erebus in An
 tarctica
