DESCRIPTION:The seminal paper of Harvey and Lawson 'Calibrated
Geometries' was published in the early 1980s. Mot
ivated by Kähler manifolds (a certain class of com
plex manifold) they define what it means to be a c
alibrated submanifold\, which has the desirable pr
operty of being volume minimising in its homology
class. With links to special holonomy and complex
geometry and also such physical theories as string
theory and M-theory\, the field has received much
attention from mathematicians over the years. \n\
nIn this talk I hope to introduce you to calibrate
d geometry\, with motivating examples. Time permit
ting\, I will go on to discuss some highlights of
work in the field\, and perhaps talk briefly about
  my own research.\n
