DESCRIPTION:Origami is the art of folding essentially two dime
nsional materials like paper into three dimensiona
l objects. It has recently gained popularity among
st scientists and engineers as the technique can b
e used to create shape-changing structures. In the
talk\, I shall briefly outline the method for mod
elling origami and then focus on the creation of n
ovel origami mechanisms. A number of examples will
be given including a foldable shopping bag\, a de
ployable grid structure and origami of thick panel
 s. These origami structures have wide engineering
applications ranging from deployable aerospace str
uctures to civilian shelters and military installa
 tions.
