DESCRIPTION:(Joint with Henry Segerman.) It is a theorem of M
oise that every three-manifold admits a triangulat
ion\, and this infinitely many. So\, it will be di
fficult to learn anything really interesting about
the three-manifold from most of its triangulation
s. Thurston introduced ``ideal triangulations'' f
or studying manifolds with torus boundary\; Lacken
by introduced ``taut ideal triangulations'' for st
udying the Thurston norm ball\; Agol introduced ``
veering triangulations'' for studying punctured su
rface bundles over the circle. Veering triangulat
ions are very rigid\; one current conjecture is th
at a three-manifold admits only finitely many veer
ing triangulations. \n\nAfter giving an overview o
f these ideas\, we will introduce ``veering Dehn s
urgery''. We use this to give the first infinite
families of veering triangulations with various in
teresting properties.
