   Conversation with\n\nDr John Leigh (University L
 ecturer in French\, Cambridge) and bladesmith Magn
 us Sigurdsson Hardradi\, who will discuss the use 
 of weapons in history\, literature and the movies.
 \n\nJohn Leigh is a specialist in eighteenth-centu
 ry French thought and literature. His most recent 
 book\, TOUCHé: THE DUEL IN LITERATURE (Harvard Uni
 versity Press\, 2015)\, explores the duel in liter
 ature from the 17th to the 20th century\, and show
 s how it illuminates the tensions that attended th
 e birth of the modern world.  More information her

 lightenment (Duckworth\, 1999) and Voltaire's Sens
 e of History (Voltaire Foundation\, 2004).\n\nMagn
 us Sigurdsson is a historian\, armourer and blades
 mith who makes weapons and armour for big and smal
 l screen productions. He will discuss the history 
 and lore of the duel with the swords that he makes
  using traditional methods. He will talk through t
 he development of weapons from the Viking holmgang
 \,  via Shakespeare's 'deadly dance' as seen in Ha
 mlet and Romeo and Juliet\, to the pistol. Magnus 
 will add a little on 'silver screen' interpretatio
