DESCRIPTION:Observations suggest the Universe had undergone pe
riods of accelerated expansion during the course o
f its evolution. I will discuss modern ideas about
the evolution of the early Universe from the big
bang to the present time and consider a model of t
he late Universe which goes beyond the usual theor
ies of gravity. Ways of testing this will be discu
ssed. I will not assume knowledge of cosmology or
general relativity\, but the talk will contain som
 e simple differential equations.
