DESCRIPTION:We review some recent results\, joint with A. Shao
  (and partly\nVolker Schlue)\, regarding the contr
 ol one can obtain for some linear and\n   non-line
 ar wave equations\, from Cauchy data on suitably l
 arge\n  portions of time-like surfaces. We obtain 
 control of the solution on\nspecific space-like su
 rfaces which have the property that any null ray\n
 crossing the surface ``registers'' on the Cauchy d
 ata set.\n  This is applied to understand the sing
 ularity profile\n  of some focusing non-linear wav
 es. Time permitting\, we may discuss some\nmore re
 cent work in this connection.
