DESCRIPTION:Adrian Poole is Professor of English Literature an
 d a Fellow of Trinity College Cambridge\, where he
  has taught since 1975. His work addresses a const
 ellation of four fields: tragedy\, literary transl
 ation\, Shakespeare\, and nineteenth-century Engli
 sh literature. He is particularly interested in th
 e after-lives led by the classics and Shakespeare 
 in the English literary imagination\, the ways in 
 which they are renewed by and a source of renewal 
 for subsequent artists. His publications include T
 ragedy: Shakespeare and the Greek Example (1987) a
 nd more recently Tragedy: A Very Short Introductio
 n (2005). With his late colleague Jeremy Maule he 
 edited The Oxford Book of Classical Verse in Trans
 lation (1995)\; since then he has contributed to T
 he Oxford Guide to Literature in English Translati
 on (2000) and to the nineteenth-century volume of 
 the Oxford History of Literary Translation in Engl
 ish (2006). Other works include a monograph on Sha
 kespeare and the Victorians\, two volumes of co-ed
 ited essays on Victorian Shakespeare (all 2003)\, 
 and various essays on nineteenth-century novelists
  such as Dickens\, George Eliot\, Hardy\, Stevenso
 n\, Gissing\, Kipling and (a particular enthusiasm
 ) Henry James.
