DESCRIPTION:There is a well-known analogy between the homologi
cal algebra of chain complexes of abelian groups a
nd the stable homotopy theory of spectra. I will t
ry to explain how homological algebra in an abelia
n category is an example of an abstract stable hom
otopy theory\, using the formalism of categories o
f fibrant objects. Time permitting\, I may also ex
plain how to think about the dreaded octahedral ax
iom of triangulated categories from the perspectiv
e of homotopy theory.\n\nNo knowledge of homotopy
 theory (either classical\, stable\, or abstract) w
ill be assumed in this talk.
