DESCRIPTION: This talk will interest those concerned with poli
 tics\, history\, and the history of science betwee
 n Japan and Britain. Prof. Bartholomew is a specia
 list in modern Japanese history\, chiefly interest
 ed in the history of science\, medicine\, higher e
 ducation\, and business in Japan. In 1985-86\, he 
 held a research fellowship from the National Scien
 ce Foundation. His 1989 book\, _The Formation of S
 cience in Japan_\, received the1992 Pfizer Award o
 f the History of Science Society. In March 2001\, 
 he was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Fe
 llowship to write a book on Japan and the Nobel sc
 ience prizes\, 1901-1949\n
