DESCRIPTION:Stephan M. Haggard is Lawrence and Sallye Krause P
 rofessor of Korea-Pacific Studies at the Universit
 y of California\, San Diego\; Director of the Kore
 a-Pacific Program\; and Distinguished Professor of
  Political Science. He is also editor of the Journ
 al of East Asian Studies and a member of the Counc
 il on Foreign Relations. He works on the political
  economy of developing countries\, with a particul
 ar interest in Asia and the Korean peninsula. He i
 s the author of Pathways from the Periphery: The P
 olitics of Growth in the Newly Industrializing Cou
 ntries (1990)\, The Political Economy of Democrati
 c Transitions (1995\, with Robert Kaufman)\, The P
 olitical Economy of the Asian Financial Crisis (20
 00) and Development\, Democracy and Welfare States

 ses on the relationship between inequality\, democ
