DESCRIPTION:Pregnancy testing has never been easier. For count
less women\, the home pregnancy test\, a ubiquitou
 s diagnostic tool/retail product\, mediates betwee
n the uncertainty of a missed period and the decis
ion either to prepare for motherhood or to termina
te an unwanted pregnancy. Yet\, although home test
ing has transformed the experience of pregnancy as
much as ultrasound or amniocentesis\, very little
is known about its history. This talk will tell t
he story of laboratory pregnancy testing in Britai
n before the first DIY tests of the 1970s. It will
argue that the market for a then controversial di
agnostic service was sustained less by imposed med
icalisation or the managerial state than by the en
trepreneurial testers and consumers who helped to
create and maintain demand. It will also rethink t
he patient-doctor relationship by placing routine
testing more centrally in our historical understan
 ding of modern laboratory medicine.
