DESCRIPTION:The project "The Evolution of School Mathematics\n
Discourse" developed a framework for analysing the
  discourse of GCSE\nexamination questions\, founde
d in the theoretical assumption that\nmathematical
activity involves engagement in mathematical form
s of\ndiscourse and hence that differences in the
discourse in which\nstudents are expected to engag
e can be interpreted as differences in\ntheir math
ematical activity. Students were asked to answer q
uestions\nwritten using forms of language found in
examinations from different\nyears. In this semin
ar I will present some of the results of this\ninv
estigation\, focusing in particular on student res
ponses to\nquestions with different degrees of spe
 cialisation.\n
