DESCRIPTION:Securing energy supply is one of the grand challen
ges we are facing today and it is difficult to env
ision a plausible solution without nuclear power.
New nuclear power plant designs are expected to of
fer improved characteristics with respect to safet
 y\, efficiency\, economics and waste management. E
xamples of representative nuclear plants and syste
ms addressing these requirements will be presented
. \n\nIn the main part of his lecture\, Prof. Petr
ovic will introduce a new reactor concept\, the In
tegral Inherently Safe Light Water Reactor (I2S-LW
R). This design concept employs a reactor configur
ation with an integral primary circuit aiming to i
mplement to a larger power reactor attractive inhe
rent safety features usually associated with integ
ral small modular reactors. This\, however\, neces
sitates innovations in its safety approach\, devel
opment of a novel fuel design\, as well as introdu
cing novel technologies for primary circuit compon
ents. I2S-LWR is being developed under a U.S. DOE
Integrated Research Project (IRP) research grant\,
recently awarded to a multidisciplinary team of 1
1 national and international organizations led by
Georgia Tech\, and including the University of Cam
 bridge.
