DESCRIPTION:We outline some aspects of deterministic phase ret
rieval\, namely the reconstruction of wavefield ph
ase from intensity measurements. Attention is focu
sed on methods employing the so-called transport-o
 f-intensity equation\, this being the continuity e
quation associated with the paraxial (parabolic) e
quation. Applications in electron microscopy\, x-
ray imaging\, neutron optics and superfluidity wil
l be discussed. We will also briefly outline the
importance of topological defects in the phase\, n
amely screw dislocations and domain walls\, on the
  question of deterministic phase retrieval.
