SUMMARY:Convection in Porous Media\, and implications for geological stora
 ge of CO_2 - Duncan Hewitt\, DAMTP

DESCRIPTION:I will present numerical simulations of statistically steady h
igh Rayleigh number convection in a porous medium\, and discuss in detail
both the buoyancy transport (Nusselt number) and the remarkable dynamical
structure of the flow. I will extend these results to consider the more p
hysically relevant context of convection from below one boundary\, and app
ly the results to the convective dissolution of carbon dioxide that has be
en injected into underground brine-saturated porous rock.
