DESCRIPTION: G_2 manifolds are special 7-dimensional manifolds
which play in important role in mathematics\, spe
cifically in the study\nof metrics with special ho
lonomy\, and in theoretical physics\, particularly
since the work of Atiyah and Witten on M-Theory.
In\nthe physical context it is important to study
G_2 manifolds that are modelled on cones: so-call
ed conifolds. These conifolds\,\nwhich may be non
-compact or singular objects\, also play a pivotal
role in the mathematical study of G_2 manifolds\,
going back to\nthe first explicit examples of G_2
manifolds constructed by Bryant and Salamon. In
this talk I will survey what is known about\nG_2 c
onifolds\, with a particular focus on my joint wor
k with S. Karigiannis on moduli spaces of G_2 coni
folds\, which leads to a\nuniqueness result for th
e Bryant-Salamon G_2 manifolds.
