DESCRIPTION:Algal monocultures are unstable because they are vulnerable to
contamination from invading species that are ubiquitous in the environmen
 t. If algae are to be grown on a large scale for the biofuels industry\, s
ignificant scale-up of production is required\, which can only be sustaina
ble if yields are guaranteed\, and the problem of contamination managed sy
stematically. We have proposed the use of artificially assembled consortia
of algae grown with other species as a more robust and productive alterna
tive to growth in monocultures. In order to achieve this\, understanding o
f fundamental algal interactions with other species is required. I will de
scribe our investigations into algal-bacterial symbiosis\, which can be ca
pitalised upon in the process of assembling algal consortia for industrial
  use.
