DESCRIPTION:By shining light on a semiconductor\, one creates
pairs of electrons and holes that bind together wi
th the Coulomb interaction to make a\nneutral ``at
om'' called an exciton ---\nthe solid state analog
of positronium.\nThe possibility that a gas of ex
citons might undergo Bose-Einstein condensation wa
s raised over 40 years ago.\n\nThough no unequivoc
al demonstration of excitonic BEC has been given i
n traditional exciton systems\, the phenomenon is
related to new quantum\nphases that have been obse
rved\nin quantum Hall bilayers\, and some quantum
spin systems\, and quite possibly\nrecently in exc
iton polaritons (which are a resonance between exc
iton and\nphoton in a strongly coupled optical mic
rocavity).\n\nMy talk will focus on explaining the
  basic ideas\, reviewing the connections\nbetween
different experimental systems\, and discussing th
 e most recent\nexperiments on exciton polaritons.\
