DESCRIPTION:One can consider algebraic groups as functors from the categor
 y of rings to the category of groups\, for instance the functor SL_n sends
  a ring R to the group SL_n(R). In this talk we will expand on this basic 
 viewpoint to talk about affine groups. We will realize affine groups as gr
 oup schemes\, and see a theorem classifying when such a group is smooth.
