DESCRIPTION:Laser spectroscopy is a technique of immense value
in atom optics as\nrecognised with last year's No
bel Prize for Physics. Can it be applied\nto an ar
tificial atom in the solid state\, a quantum dot?
In order to\nremove the inhomogeneous broadening i
t is essential to attempt these\nexperiments on ju
st a single quantum dot\, a challenging enterprise
. We\nhave now succeeded in this mission. The talk
presents laser spectroscopy\non a single quantum
dot presenting the detection scheme\, an exchange\
ninteraction which we can turn on and off simply w
ith a bias voltage\, and\nthe effects of both elec
 tron and hole tunneling.\n\n
