DESCRIPTION:A very significant upgrade will soon be made to al
 l managed Linux desktop computers in DAMTP and DPM
 MS\n(from Scientific Linux 5 to SL6).\n\nEven if y
 ou only make very occasional use of the Linux comp
 uters this upgrade is very likely to affect\nyou.\
 n\nThere is an Open Meeting (with nibbles and feel
  free to bring your lunch with you) this Friday\n(
 24/05/2013) at 3pm. The new Scientific Linux 6 (SL
 6) desktop will be briefly demonstrated and then\n
 the floor opened to questions\, followed by social
  mingling and Maths Computer Officers being availa
 ble\nto discuss anything computing and IT.\n\nComp

 e of the significant changes are:\n\n- power savin
 g: Linux computers that are idle and not exporting
  storage will shut-down if no-one is\nlogged in\n\
 n- up-to-date texlive LaTeX installation: provides
  many more packages and requires a different\nTEXI
 NPUTS and PATH which are set centrally. If your lo
 gin does not use the central login scripts\nplease

 PATH is changing (adding /alt/bin for some central
  software)\, default\naliases for commands such as
  "ls" are changing\nhttp://www.maths.cam.ac.uk/com

 ers: for local email users (not the University ema
 il service called\nHermes) local nfs is no longer 
 supported. Thunderbird and webmail users should no
 t be affected. For\nmost users of pine and mutt yo

  you use your mail\nclient or make a small configu

  and DAMTP will be listed\n\n- dropbox will not in
