DESCRIPTION:His talk is focused on an approach to teach underg
raduates about sustainability\, developed at the W
arsaw University of Technology\, which includes an
introductory course on the most important problem
s of sustainable development\, and a set of exampl
es\, given in other lecture courses during the und
ergraduate education. In the introductory course p
roblems discussed are shortage of energy\, resourc
es\, food (including water) and deterioration of t
he environment. Problem solutions and appropriate
measures related to chemical\nengineering and biot
echnology will be discussed such as membrane techn
ologies for water purification\, biogas production
from wastes\, carbon dioxide removal and sequestr
ation.\nProfessor Pohorecki was head of the Chemic
 al Reactor and Bioprocess\nEngineering Division\,
and director of the Centre of Biotechnology. For s
everal years he served as Vice President for Scien
 ce\, European Federation of\nChemical Engineering\
, and Vice President for Europe\, Alliance of Univ
ersities for Democracy. He is member of the Polish
Academy of Sciences\, honorary member of the Czec
h Society of Chemical Engineering\, holder of the
Purkyne Medal\, Czech Academy of Sciences\, and Vi
llermaux Medal\, European Federation of Chemical E
ngineering. He is author or co-author of 6 books\,
and over 250 research papers. His main scientific
interests include chemical reaction engineering a
 nd bioprocess engineering.
