DESCRIPTION:Classical and quantum field theories may be though
t of as appropriate functors from (some version of
) the cobordism category. At the quantum level thi
s was proposed by Segal as an axiomatization. Inca
rnations of this exist for nonperturbative topolog
ical field theory (by Witten following Atiyah's ve
rsion of the axioms for TFTs) as well as in one an
d two dimensional field theories. This talk (based
on joint work with Mnev and Reshetikhin) will giv
e an introduction to the classical version and to
the Batalin-Vilkovisky version\, which forms the s
tarting point for the perturbative quantization. T
he possibility of including boundaries of boundari
es (and so on) naturally yields to a Lurie-type de
scription. Eventually\, one might be able to recon
struct perturbative quantum theories on manifolds
by gluing simple pieces together. Work in progress
on this will be presented.\n
