DESCRIPTION:Riemann's moduli space M_g classifies families of genus g Riem
 ann\nsurfaces\, and is also a model for the classifying space of the group
 \nof diffeomorphisms of a genus g surface. In 1985 Harer proved his\nceleb
 rated stability theorem\, which states that the i-th cohomology of\nM_g is
  independent of g\, as long as g is large compared with i. More\nrecently\
 , Madsen and Weiss computed the cohomology of M_g in this\nlarge genus reg
 ime\, confirming a conjecture of Mumford.\n\nI will discuss recent joint w
 ork with S. Galatius\, where we establish\nan analogous pair of results fo
 r manifolds of higher even dimension.\n
