DESCRIPTION:A light-hearted rejoinder to a problematic issue -
to begin with - for the PowerPoint talk will focu
s on Polychrome Sculpture\, a topic which has seri
ously engaged scholars for more than two centuries
\, and sculptors and painters for much\, much long
er. I propose to highlight some historical\, philo
sophical and technical aspects to which my own res
earch has led me. The subject has a multi-discipli
nary nature\, art historical in the first instance
\, while scientifically grounded in conservation t
echniques and what these can reveal. Culturally se
en\, polychrome sculpture has been celebrated and
condemned\, revived and misunderstood\, and shunne
d by purists who would have nothing to do with col
our in sculpture. But is it really just form versu
 s colour?
