DESCRIPTION:This example of a crime-prevention workshop introd
uces methods which help people learn to notice wha
t is going on around them. It covers methodical sc
anning\, asking the right questions\, and telling
yourself the story of what is going on around you.
People who notice what is going on around them te
nd to be safer on the street. \n\nThe theories di
scussed include situational crime prevention\, and
specifically routine activity theory. In routine
activity theory a capable guardian is held to be a
ble to reduce crime in the face of a motivated off
ender and a suitable target. I propose that observ
ation skills make a capable guardian more effectiv
e\, and in the workshop I offer exercises that sho
 uld improve observation skills.\n
