DESCRIPTION:The evening will consist of a 45 min talk by Jason
Cole\, Deputy Executive Director\, on the work of
the CCDC\, followed by a tour of the Centre\, dem
onstration of software and refreshments.\n\nThe Ca
mbridge Crystallographic Data Centre is a non-prof
it\, charitable Institution whose objectives are t
he general advancement and promotion of the scienc
e of chemistry and crystallography for the public
benefit. The CCDC was originally established in th
e University of Cambridge Chemical Laboratory in 1
 965. Its principal remit is to compile and distrib
ute a computerised database (the Cambridge Structu
ral Database\, CSD) containing data for organic an
d metal-organic compounds studied by X-ray and neu
tron diffraction. The CSD is comprehensive for all
results published in the open literature since th
e inception of the technique in the early 1900s. T
he CCDC serves the scientific community through th
 e acquisition\, evaluation\, dissemination and use
of the world's output of small molecule crystal s
tructures by: \n* Compiling the Cambridge Structur
al Database (CSD) - the world repository of small-
molecule crystal structures \n* Developing scienti
fic products and services - structural knowledge b
ases and applications software for the life scienc
es and crystallography \n* Maximising worldwide ac
cessibility to the CSD for scientists in academia
and industry \n* Performing and supporting fundame
ntal research using CSD information and CCDC produ
cts \n* Promoting and supporting applications of c
rystal structure information in academia and indus
try.\n\nThe building\, which is next door to the U
niversity Chemistry Department\, was designed by i
nternational architect Professor Erik Sorensen. Co
mpleted in 1992\, the building won the Sunday Time
s/Royal Fine Arts Society Building of the Year Awa
rd in 1993.\n\nFree and open to non-members. \nReg
istration required - contact John O'Toole (details
below). \n\nEvent organised by SCI's Cambridge an
d Great Eastern Group & the RSC Mid-Anglia Section
.\n\nMeet at the CCDC just before 19:00
